Injury assessment of common nage-waza judo techniques for amateur judokas

    Get PDF
There are few detailed publications that allow performing associations between the technical aspects and the occurrence of injuries. The purpose of this study was to apply a methodology based in recording material to assess the injury risk factors. Common nage-waza judo techniques during regular training of amateur judokas were used as a case study. Novice students (n=193; 100 men and 93 women) from the University of Vigo during five academic years (2003 to 2008) were filmed during the ordinary training period of the technical execution of ten nage-waza techniques. The obtained data were evaluated using descriptive statistics and tpatterns analysis. Thus, it was possible to identify the presence of typical inaccuracies during execution of the technique uncovering the main temporal sequence of errors allowing us to link our findings with the injury occurrence. In order to narrow the unexpected causes of accidents regarding poor technique performance in regular training, this research provides the hidden temporal sequence of errors of common throw techniques, helping professionals to correct the key technical errors in order to prevent diverse type injuries. The methodology developed here could be easily extended to other martial sports.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Smart shirt with embedded vital sign and moisture sensing

    Get PDF
This paper presents the development of a smart shirt with embedded electrodes in two-lead configuration for heart rate measurement and a knitted moisture sensor for sweat detection. Signal conditioning for heart rate measurement is based on the Analog Devices AD8232 heart rate monitor front-end. The shirt is part of a fireman interactive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which monitors information on heart rate and sweat detection, among other variables. Sweat detection is used to avoid skin burns that may occur due to the combination of excessive moisture and heat. Tests have demonstrated that the measurement of heart rate using the shirt is as efficient as conventional solutions, such as heart-rate monitoring straps. Sweat detection through textile moisture sensors has also shown to be effective.FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in the framework of project UID/CTM/00264/2013 and project PROTACTICAL - Co-Promoção Nº Projecto: 23267, sponsored by ADI

Imunofluorescência direta: um teste sensível e especifico para o diagnóstico da Campilobacteriose genital em touros.

    Get PDF

The Baltic prawn Palaemon adspersus Rathke, 1837 (Decapoda, Caridea, Palaemonidae): first record, possible establishment, and illustrated key of the subfamily Palaemoninae in northwest Atlantic waters

    Get PDF
This study documents the introduction of the European Baltic prawn, Palaemon adspersus Rathke, 1837 to the coastal waters of northeastern North America, specifically the west coast of Newfoundland and the Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. Species identification was verified using morphological and genetic criteria. In September 2011, the first specimens of P. adspersus were collected in Gulf of St. Lawrence waters near Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, Canada. In 2012, additional P. adspersus specimens were collected in this area and at St. Andrew’s, located further south in western Newfoundland and in 2013 several egg-bearing females were collected further north in York Harbour. Accidental transport by ballast water of ships seems the likely vector for transport of Baltic prawn to the Gulf of St. Lawrence from Northern Europe or the Caspian Sea. It is possible that this shrimp has a wider presence in Atlantic Canadian waters but, due to its close resemblance to native shrimp species, it may have been previously misidentified, as occurred with specimens collected from the Magdalen Islands. We further expect that other species of the genus Palaemon, including P. elegans Rathke, 1837 from the Baltic Sea or northeastern United States, and P. macrodactylus Rathbun, 1902 from the northeastern United States, may invade the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We provide an illustrated key for the identification of these exotic Palaemon species and to differentiate them from native members of the subfamily Palaemoninae.Funding for this project was provided by the Government of Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans and AGL2011-23689 grant from the Spanish government (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad). Financial support to EGO was provided by a Marie Curie fellowship with European funds.Peer reviewe

Scattering phases for meson and baryon resonances on general moving-frame lattices

    Get PDF
A proposal by L\"uscher enables one to compute the scattering phases of elastic two-body systems from the energy levels of the lattice Hamiltonian in a finite volume. In this work we generalize the formalism to S--, P-- and D--wave meson and baryon resonances, and general total momenta. Employing nonvanishing momenta has several advantages, among them making a wider range of energy levels accessible on a single lattice volume and shifting the level crossing to smaller values of mπLm_\pi L.Comment: 41 pages, 3 figures. Hydrogen bond stabilization in Diels–Alder transition states: The cycloaddition of hydroxy-ortho-quinodimethane with fumaric acid and dimethylfumarate

    Get PDF
DFT investigations on the mechanism of Diels–Alder reactions of a hydroxy-ortho-quinodimethane with fumaric acid derivatives were performed to understand the origin of the syn or anti configuration of the adducts. The diene hydroxyl group and the dieneophile carboxyl group show hydrogen bonding in the transition state, significantly favouring the syn product. This reaction is poorly diastereoselective for R = CO₂Me (ratio syn/anti = 57:43) and significantly improved for R = CO₂H (ratio syn/anti = 71:29). The stereoselectivities are properly predicted from transition structures calculated at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level
